The Department of Botany, DAV University, actively engages students in a diverse range of academic and co-curricular activities to foster scientific curiosity, research aptitude, and environmental awareness. The department organizes seminars, workshops, and guest lectures by eminent scientists to keep students updated on the latest advancements in plant sciences and biotechnology. Regular educational trips to renowned research institutes like FRI Dehradun and IHBT Palampur provide hands-on exposure to cutting-edge research and conservation practices. The department also celebrates important environmental days, such as World Ozone Day and National Science Day, through competitions, awareness campaigns, and plantation drives. Interactive events like quizzes, model exhibitions, and poster presentations encourage student participation and creativity. Through these multifaceted activities, the department ensures a holistic academic experience, nurturing students’ passion for botany while equipping them with practical knowledge and skills for future careers in research, conservation, and sustainable development.

1. Ozone day celebration:

The Department of Botany at DAV University celebrated Ozone Day in year 2017, 2018 with great enthusiasm, highlighting the importance of ozone layer conservation through various educational and interactive activities. The event featured talks on climate change and ozone depletion, an engaging poster-making competition, and a plantation drive to promote environmental sustainability. Students of Department of Botany actively participated in spreading awareness about the need to reduce ozone-depleting substances. The celebration reinforced the university’s commitment to ecological preservation and inspired young minds to contribute to a healthier planet.

2. R C Mahindru Award:

The R C Mahindru Award was instituted by the Department of Botany at DAV University, Jalandhar, in honor of the esteemed faculty member, R.C. Mahindru, to recognize and encourage academic excellence among students. In 2018 and 2019, the department organized an intra-departmental quiz competition, aiming to foster a spirit of inquiry and enthusiasm for science among students. The event not only commemorated the contributions of R.C. Mahindru to the academic community but also provided a platform for students to showcase their scientific acumen and collaborative skills. Winners were honored with the R C Mahindru Award, symbolizing their outstanding performance and dedication to scientific learning.

3. Darwin Day Celebration:

In 2018, the Department of Botany at DAV University, Jalandhar, celebrated Darwin Day to honor the remarkable contributions of Charles Darwin to the field of science, particularly evolutionary biology. As part of the celebration, students actively participated by giving presentations that highlighted Darwin's life, groundbreaking theories, and their lasting impact on modern science. Through informative talks, visual presentations, and interactive discussions, the students paid tribute to Darwin’s legacy and his role in shaping biological thought.

4. Plantation Drive:

The Department of Botany at DAV University organized plantation drives in the years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and ecological awareness. These drives involved active participation from faculty, staff, and students, who planted a variety of native and ornamental tree species within and around the university campus. The initiative aimed to promote green cover, enhance biodiversity, and sensitize students about the importance of trees in combating climate change and maintaining ecological balance. Through these efforts, the department fostered a strong sense of environmental responsibility and community engagement.

5. Expert lecture:

The Department of Botany at DAV University organized two significant expert lectures to enhance student learning and exposure to contemporary scientific advancements. On 11th August 2017, an expert lecture on the “Evolution of Gene Concept” was conducted, offering students valuable insights into the historical development and modern understanding of the gene, from Mendelian genetics to molecular biology. Later, on 12th March 2019, the department hosted another expert lecture on “Terrestrial LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging),” a cutting-edge technology used for high-resolution mapping and vegetation analysis. These lectures, delivered by subject experts, provided students with an opportunity to engage with emerging scientific tools and theories, encouraging critical thinking and research-oriented learning.  

6. Science day Celebration:

The Department of Botany, DAV University, celebrates National Science Day each year with a variety of activities aimed at fostering scientific curiosity and innovation among students. The event features expert talks, research presentations and interactive workshops on emerging topics in biological sciences. Students actively participate in poster-making competitions, quizzes, and model exhibitions to showcase their scientific knowledge and creativity. The department also organizes hands-on demonstrations and field visits to enhance practical learning. Through these initiatives, the celebration not only honors the contributions of scientists but also inspires young minds to explore the wonders of science and its impact on society.

7. Educational trips:

In 2016, the Department of Botany organized an educational trip to Harike Pattan Wetland, one of the largest freshwater wetlands in northern India, to enhance students' understanding of wetland ecology and biodiversity conservation. The visit allowed students to observe a rich variety of migratory birds, aquatic plants, and ecological interactions in their natural habitat. Guided by experts, the students learned about the ecological importance of wetlands, threats to their sustainability, and ongoing conservation efforts. The trip provided a hands-on learning experience in environmental science and reinforced the significance of preserving natural ecosystems for maintaining ecological balance.

The Department of Botany, DAV University, organizes enriching educational and recreational trips to provide students with experiential learning beyond the classroom. The department conducted an educational trip to Pantnagar in year 2018 and 2020, where students explore renowned agricultural research institutes and interact with experts to gain insights into modern farming techniques, plant breeding, and sustainable agricultural practices. The visit enhanced their understanding of real-world applications of botany and environmental sciences.

In year 2019 and 2020, the department arranged recreational trips to historical and culturally rich destinations such as Jodhpur and Jaipur, allowing students to experience the architectural marvels, biodiversity, and heritage of Rajasthan. These trips serve as a perfect blend of education and leisure, fostering team bonding, curiosity, and holistic development. Through these well-planned excursions, the department ensures that students gain practical knowledge while also appreciating the beauty of nature and history.

The Department of Botany, DAV University, organized an educational trips to the prestigious Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun in year 2018 to provide students with firsthand exposure to advanced research and conservation efforts in forestry and environmental sciences. During these visits, students explored various divisions of FRI, including the museum, herbarium, and research laboratories, where they gain insights into forest biodiversity, wood science, climate change mitigation, and sustainable forestry practices. Experts and scientists at the institute interacted with students, sharing knowledge on afforestation, forest management, and the role of biotechnology in conservation.

In year 2019, Department of Botany, DAV University, organized an educational trip to the Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur, to provide students with in-depth exposure to cutting-edge research in plant biotechnology, medicinal plants, and sustainable bioresource utilization. During these visits, students explored state-of-the-art laboratories, interacted with scientists, and gained hands-on knowledge about tissue culture techniques, herbal drug development, and the conservation of rare and endangered plant species. Experts at IHBT offered valuable insights into biotechnological advancements in agriculture, biofuels, and climate-resilient crops, broadening students' perspectives on the practical applications of botany.

In 2023, the Department of Botany organized an educational trip to Punjabi University, Patiala, providing students with valuable exposure to advanced research facilities and academic practices in the field of plant sciences. A guided tour of the university’s botanical garden further enriched their understanding of plant diversity and conservation efforts. The trip offered a unique opportunity for students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications, inspiring many to consider careers in botanical research and higher education.
