Industrial visit to Verka Milk Plant, Ludhiana

One day industrial visit to Verka Milk Plant, Ludhiana was organized by the Department of Microbiology, DAV University for the UG and PG students of Microbiology Department. The students were accompanied by Dr. Talwinder Kaur and Dr. Amandeep Brar of Microbiology department. Verka is a leading co-operative giant in the field of Food & Beverage Industry employing most of the modern cutting-edge technologies with respect to food and dairy microbiology. Therefore, main objective of this trip was to better equip our students with the practical know-how with reference to sophisticated processes, technologies, raw and final product quality analysis involved in dairy industry. Being a fully automated industrial unit with daily processing capacity of more than 10 lakh litres, the technical experts of Verka Milk Plant explained the industrial processes and answered the queries of the students. The visit will be helpful for the students in augmenting the skillset required in the industry.

Educational Visit to Mushroom Facility at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana

On February 25, 2025, a group of 41 students from the Department of Microbiology, DAV University, Jalandhar, accompanied by three faculty members (Dr. Meenakshi, Dr. Sapna, and Dr. Avinash) visited the Mushroom Facility at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. The primary objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to mushroom cultivation and production techniques, supplementing their theoretical knowledge.

Experts at the facility conducted an informative session covering various aspects of mushroom cultivation, including substrate preparation, inoculation, incubation, and harvesting techniques. Students also received a hands-on demonstration of different cultivation methods for popular mushroom varieties such as button mushroom, oyster mushroom and shiitake mushroom.

During the visit, experts explained the role of microbiological principles in mushroom cultivation, particularly in spawn production and disease management. The students actively engaged in discussions and clarified their doubts regarding sterilization techniques, environmental conditions, and post-harvest processing.

The visit proved to be highly informative and beneficial for students, enhancing their understanding of applied microbiology in the field of fungal biotechnology. It also inspired many to explore entrepreneurship opportunities in mushroom farming. The visit successfully bridged the gap between classroom learning and practical applications, making it a valuable educational experience.

National Puzzle Day event

The National Puzzle day was celebrated and organized by the Department of Microbiology, DAV University for the UG and PG students of Microbiology Department. The event was based on scientific games and puzzles such as Sudoku, Snakes and Ladder, Dumb Charades and puzzle. Sudoku was based on arrangement of number within 0 mins, in snakes and ladders students moved to next step by answering a question accordingly. Similarly in puzzle picture of scientific person or things with little description was hinted to the students who then answered, scored a point. Lastly dumb charades was played among student to pick up a chit out of a box and acted upon it. All the game took place in room no 708. The first prize in Sudoku was attained by Sanchita Gandhi (B.sc III) and M.sc Ist (Microbiology) took lead and won in rest of the three games. Each team has different participants. All the winner and participants were awarded with certificates by Dr. Praveen Guleria and respected judges during the interaction.

Industrial visit to Jagjit Industries, Hamira

One day industrial visit to Jagjit Industries, Hamira was organized by the Department of Microbiology, DAV University for the UG and PG students (25 students) of Microbiology Department. The students were accompanied by Dr. Praveen Guleria, Ms. Saloni Rai and Dr. Amandeep Brar of Microbiology department. Jagjit Industries has the unique distinction of being one of the largest integrated distilleries manufacturing potable alcohol in Asia, and the first in India with-in house facilities for producing molasses and non-molasses based potable alcohol from fully automated distillation plants. Therefore, main objective of this trip was to better equip our students with the practical know-how with reference to sophisticated processes, technologies, raw and final product quality analysis involved in distillery industry. The visit will be helpful for the students in augmenting the skillset required in the industry. Apart from the Industry, students visited Jung-e-Azadi located on the way to Industry and this memorial has helped students to know the struggle of our great freedom fighters.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Department of Microbiology celebrated ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’ on 15th February 2023, by organizing poster and rangoli making competition under the guidance of Dr. Praveen Guleria, Dr. Talwinder Kaur and Ms. Saloni. The central idea for celebrating the was just to encourage students to show their creativity. All the students of different departments participated in these competitions with full zeal and zest. There were 29 poster entries and 8 rangoli teams with 29 participants. The posters were displaced in the department itself and the space for rangoli competition was also allocated in the department itself. These events were adjudged by Dr. Tejinder Kaur, Dr. Sonika, Dr. Shikha Sharma and Dr. Praveen Guleria. Top 3 were awarded by certificates.
