NCM Teacher’s Enrichment Workshop in Mathematics at DAV University
May 28, 2018

A six days Teacher’s Enrichment Workshop on Algebra and Multivariable Calculus commenced successfully on May 28, 2018 at DAV University, Jalandhar. This workshop was organised by the Department of Mathematics, DAV University, Jalandhar, in collaboration with National Center of Mathematics (NCM) which is a joint venture of IIT Bombay and TIFR Mumbai. NCM organizes Advanced Training in Mathematics Schools (ATM Schools) to provide training in core subjects in Mathematics to Ph.D. students, young researchers and teachers across India in order to enhance the quality of mathematical education.

The objective of this particular workshop is to introduce some of the basic facts of Algebra and Multivariate calculus which are two main branches of mathematics and are playing a significant role in different areas of science.

There will be 4 lectures daily in the six-day’s workshop delivered by four eminent researchers from various reputed institutes of India. The speakers on the first day included Prof. Dinesh Khurana and Dr Rahul. Prof. Dinesh Khurana, from the Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, is a well known algebraist in India as well as acting as the Academic Convener of the workshop. Known to be a man with few words but brilliant mind, Prof. Khurana has more than 40 publications in international journals of repute. The second resource person, Dr. Rahul Kitture, has done Ph.D. from Bhaskaracharya Prathisthan in Group Theory. He is NPDF fellow at IISER Mohali from November 2017-till date. These two eminent researchers will share their immense knowledge for the next three days with the teachers as participants from various universities like LPU, Akal University and other colleges of nearby regions, who have gathered here at DAV University. Dr.Chanchal Kumar – Associate Professor at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali and Prof. Surya Ramanafrom Harish Chandra Research Institute (HRI) Allahabad, will join as two resource persons for the last three days of the workshop.

The participants were welcomed by Dr. Raj Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics. The workshop was formally inaugurated by Dr R K Mahajan, Vice Chancellor, DAV University, while Dr Desh Bandhu Gupta, Dean Academics and the faculty members of the Department of Mathematics including Dr Sarika, Dr Shelly Garg, Dr Himani Arora, Mr Avtar Chand and Ms Shruti Bhadwar were also present during the event. Addressing the students, Dr Mahajan said that the students would go home enriched after this workshop and he also shared his experiences during his encounters with Mathematics as a subject at the early stages of his life. Dr Gupta encouraged the participants to motivate their students of their respective institutes to use the Mathematical theorems in practical life. Prof. Mahajan appreciated the faculty members, Dr Suraj Goyal and Dr Ajay Kumar, who are the conveners of this workshop, for their efforts and encouraged them to follow the same zeal in future endeavours.
