Dr. Chanchal Kumar – Associate Professor at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali demonstrated a simple method to carry out cumbersome mathematical calculations. Dr. Kumar elaborated how learning Mathematics could be fun and there were several alternatives to solve the same problems.
Dr. Chanchal Kumar, while delivering a guest lecture at the Department of Mathematics, DAV University, Jalandhar, highlighted that formula devised by an eminent Mathematician Euler was still valid and could be implied to find out the area of any polygon. What surprised the students was that Dr Kumar did not use the conventional approach of calculating area by multiplying length and breath. He instead used a number of integral points within and on the boundary of any polygon. He highlighted that this method of calculation was described by another eminent Mathematician George Pick.
Dr Kumar – who is an alumnus of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai – also interacted with the students and responded to their queries. More than 150 students attended the lecture.
The guest lecture was formally inaugurated by Dr A K Paul, Vice Chancellor, DAV University while Dr Jasbir Rishi, Dean Academics and the faculty member of the Mathematics Department including Dr Sarika, Dr Raj Kumar, Dr Ajay Kumar, Dr Suraj Goyal, Dr Shelly Garg, Mr Ashok Mahajan, Ms Himani, Mr Avtar Chand, Ms Neetu Thakur and Ms Shaifalika were also present. Addressing the students, Dr Paul said that the students would go home enriched after the guest lecture.
