Disputing irrational thoughts can lead to happiness

Practical sessions and demonstration of therapeutic techniques in behavioral therapy dominated the second day of the workshop on Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) organized at DAV University, Jalandhar. Psychotherapist Dr Shreya Pahwa, who conducted the workshop under the aegis of the Department of Psychology, DAV University, divided participants in groups of six persons each and provided some material to help them solve their problems. The purpose of the exercise was to prepare people to tackle crisis, she said. “People have a lot of resources available with them during crisis. They must focus on identifying correct resources to get of the problematic situations, she said.

The participants at the workshop said that they had learnt how to dispute irrational thoughts. “Having irrational thoughts are normal but their management is a must to lead a happy and healthy life,” said Gurpal Kaur, a student pursuing MA Psychology at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar. She said that the workshop was a turning point in her life. “If we leave our egos aside, we can achieve a lot,” she said.

Another participant at the workshop Parminder Kaur said that learning that rational behavior could pave way to positivity in life. Parminder, who is doing Ph D in Education at Punjabi University, Patiala said that inducing positive thoughts could change the way people look at life.

Anjleen Uppal, managing director at Divine Healing Centre said that the workshop taught them that an ethical choice should be made between worldly success and happiness.

Dr Rakesh Kumar Mahajan, Vice-Chancellor of the University said that the workshop was a success and the feedback of the participants was a testimony. The workshop aimed at training counsellors, mental health professionals and students to help people identify, evaluate and act against their irrational self-defeating beliefs for feeling better and it lived up to the mandate, said  the Vice Chancellor. Dr. Sushma Arya, Registrar and Dr Jasbir Rishi, Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) and head, department of psychology said that the workshop will go a long way to help counsellors and teachers to improve behavioral quotient of the people including students.
