Department of Agricultural Sciences, DAV University, organized an expert talk on “Water use Efficiency in Agriculture: Need and Methods”. Dean Academics, Prof Desh Bandhu Gupta, gave a brief introduction of the University and welcomed the guests.  Smt. Jyoti Sharma, a social entrepreneur, founder, of FORCE group of nonprofits, Chairperson PJRB-SPARC and a Business management expert from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, highlighted the importance of efficient water management. She highlighted that emerging water crisis is a matter of concern for all of us. A vast country like India which has about 16 % of global population produces only 4 % of global fresh water. Smt. Sharma emphasized on watershed management and need based application of irrigation water. Students were acquainted with the FAO endorsed conservation agriculture techniques which includes permanent soil cover, minimum tillage and plant diversification. Spot application of water was also emphasized with the help of real farm pictures. Concept of Hydroponics, organic farming and microirrigation were also discussed. Mr GurpreetSahni, Director of PJRB, SPARC discussed the scenario of water crisis in Punjab. He warned against the decreasing level of water table and its over utilization for irrigation and stressed upon proper irrigation scheduling in Punjab. An initiative by UN “More crops with fewer drop” was explained to the audience. Smt. Jyoti Sharma further informed the students regarding the E212 program of their organization which includes online courses, training, capacity building and farmer advisory services. She motivated the students to promote proper resource utilization and water management techniques. The session was highly interactive and informative. Dr. R.S Rekhi concluded the discussion and proposed a vote of thanks to all the dignitaries. All the faculty members and final year students of the Department of Agricultural sciences were present in the expert talk.
