DAV University Nurtures Healthy Living through Nutrition Awareness Week

DAV University took a dynamic initiative to celebrate Nutrition Awareness Week, setting the stage for a vibrant event filled with educational initiatives and culinary delights. Running from September 25 to September 30, this week-long celebration aligned with the government’s Poshan Maah (Nutrition Month) observed annually in September.

Organised by the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FAS) at the University, students affiliated to Agro Club orchestrated a series of activities that spotlighted the theme, “Suposhit Bharat. Sakshar Bharat, Shashakt Bharat” meaning a healthy India, literate India, empowered India.

At the heart of the event, a captivating exhibition showcased a diverse array of healthy food grains, encompassing millets, cereals, oilseeds, pulses, and more. Complementing these displays were charts detailing the nutritional values of these grains, which were prominently featured for the benefit of the university’s faculty and students.

Adding an artistic touch to the occasion, students crafted a stunning rangoli using different crop seeds, showcasing their creativity and dedication to the cause.

The festivities commenced on September 25 with a lecture on adolescent nutrition, delivered by Ms Guljeet Kaur, Head of the Department of Clinical Dietetics at Fortis-Escorts Hospital, Amritsar. The lecture drew students and faculty members from the department, with guests including Dr S K Arora, Registrar, Dr R K Seth, Dean of Sciences and Engineering, and Dr Manik Sharma, Dean of Computer Science and Technology.

On September 29, a virtual seminar, “Healthy Lifestyle, with Emphasis on Nutrition,” featured Dr Prabhdeep Sandha, Graduate Programme Director and Assistant Professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver, USA, as a guest speaker. The seminar saw active participation from Agriculture students, who also engaged in an online quiz focused on nutrition, thoughtfully curated by Dr Sandha. Her presentation emphasized the pivotal role of breakfast in daily nutrition and expounded on the three fundamental principles for a healthy lifestyle: “Sound sleep, Good nutrition, and Physical activity.” Dr Sandha also provided valuable insights into various employment prospects within the field of Nutrition and Dietetics. The seminar concluded with gratitude expressed by Dr K S Thind, Dean (FAS), for Dr. Sandha’s insightful session.

Adding a culinary flair to the festivities, the Agro Club of the Agriculture department hosted the “Savory Showdown,” a culinary competition that featured dishes made from millets and their nutritive components. Visitors and judges alike relished highlights of the competition, including ragi laddoo, Kashmiri sweets, masala chai, sabudana fritters, and more, which were enjoyed by faculty and students from various departments.

Dr S K Arora, Registrar honoured the winners of the poster competition, Digital Splash (digital posters), and the Savory Showdown competitions.
